The decision to have this hunting competition in spring, is to take the opportunity of longer daylight hours, better weather and warmer conditions. This is a family friendly event that we hope we can encourage more people (old, young, new and experienced) to get out into the hills to hopefully harvest some prime wild venison for the table.

Balancing any hunting competition with the seasons and timings on nature is always a challenge.  We understand that people hunt for different reasons, and as hunters everyone has and is welcome to their different views, motivations and opinions.  As a collective organisation group for this year’s 2025 Spring Sika Hind Hunt, we are comfortable that this hunting competition is being held at a time of year that is late enough in the year that it encourages participation amongst the wider hunting community, whilst ensuring we don’t go too deep and late into the gestation period where fawns could be dropping and potentially orphaned.

With advice and recommendations from the Sika Foundation, we understand as a group of recreational hunters, we need to help do our part to contribute to keeping the numbers sika deer numbers down, as there is ongoing scrutiny from wider stakeholder and community groups around the overabundance of deer in our mountains and forests.

As a collective group this is where we feel comfortable being involved, and we encourage those that choose to be involved to help towards maintaining a healthier Sika herd and habitat for future generations of little hunters to come.
